How did you decide when to come home?
I burnt out after 9 months of being on the road- always planning, making decisions on where I would stay, where and what to eat, where to go next, how to get from point A to B, meeting new people daily, being in a different environment and culture, often feeling out of place. Traveling takes a lot of effort and is unlike being on vacation/holiday. It’s challenging yet rewarding.
Would you go back to Africa again?
Without a doubt. Africans have a saying, “Once you step on African soil, you’ll always come back.” This is a 100% true for me. I know I’ll continue to go back to the beauty and wonders of the African continent!
What was your favorite country?
I have two-South Africa is one of my favorite places- it’s magical, beautiful, and feels like home. I felt good every place I stayed. The geography reminds me a lot of California too and is likely why I felt so at home there. I’ll be returning many many times!
Mozambique is stunningly beautiful. There are many places untouched and the lack of a tourist infrastructure makes it a bit harder. Most people visit through an Overland tour but if you’re feeling like you’re truly ready for adventure- travel by local transport. You’ll appreciate the local transport in Tanzania, South Africa and Malawi. It’s distinctively African with Portuguese flavor and influence. Everyone speaks Portuguese. Strange.
Is the travel bug out of your system yet?
Nope. Now that I’ve being home a YEAR, I’m getting the itch again. For now, short travels will have to suffice. Though I was concerned for a while because I couldn’t imagine the thought of traveling for a while.
Where do you want to go next?
Spain and live there.
Australia. 30 and under Americans can get a work visa. I really like this idea!
